Flute, shawm and bagpipes – pastoral music and nativity play
Since the Middle Ages, the Christmas story is listed with their individual scenes in the church as well as outside the churches. The Nativity play on Christmas Eve was doing particularly embellished lovingly over the centuries. Various representations of the Christmas events, seals, songs and compositions for Christmas night show the shepherds with their typical instruments. With flute, shawm, bagpipe and horn shepherds run to the stable of Bethlehem. There they pray to the divine child in the crib and play him on their instruments. – In addition to the exhibition “Religion and play” is dedicated to the Christmas season a department in the Diocesan Museum Rottenburg the subject of pastoral music in liturgy and Christmas nativity play.
