Socially characterised value systems and memory practices as well as individual experiences become visible on the body – it is a repository and transmitter of cultural knowledge and social and personal identity(ies). The creative design and shaping of one’s own body is one of the central means of communication of our present day: by covering or displaying the body, a self-image is developed, social attributions are rejected or accepted. The body – be it the physical body or its reproduced image – is therefore a medium and means of expression that also plays a constitutive role in Christian visual cultures.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
“The central events of Christianity do not take place on parchment and paper, but on the human body of flesh and blood.
