The Rottenburg Diocesan Museum is looking for a candidate to start on 1 October 2026
a research assistant
(25% working hours, permanent position)
The Rottenburg Diocesan Museum houses sacred art dating from the 2nd to the 21st century, including works of European significance. One of the museum’s branches is the exhibition space in the Sülchenkirche in Rottenburg.
The Sülchenkirche is one of the oldest Christian sites in south-west Germany. The site has had an unbroken tradition of burial for around 1,500 years. The oldest stone structure discovered beneath the present-day church was built no later than the 7th century. errichtet. The site is also steeped in tradition as it has served as the burial place of the bishops of Rottenburg since 1869.
The museum area in the lower church reveals the foundations of the earlier buildings (circa 1000 / 12th century). The impressive grave finds from the Early Middle Ages and the Baroque period, unearthed during excavations beneath the Sülchenkirche, are on display in two exhibition rooms. A multimedia presentation brings the history of the place to life.
Their tasks are in particular:
o Coordinating and conducting guided tours of the church, the excavation sites, the museum section and the bishop’s crypt
o Assessing the conservation and technical conditions on site (climate, audiovisual presentation)
o Managing public relations
We expect you to:
o A postgraduate degree (MA, Master’s or equivalent) in a subject relevant to museum work (art history, particularly medieval and Baroque religious art, theology, history, archaeology)
o Experience in the museum sector and museum education
o Experience in public relations is desirable
o Strong communication skills and a confident manner
o Organisational skills
o Ability to work in a team
o Flexibility regarding working hours (including weekends)
We offer you a varied and responsible role, along with the standard benefits provided in the public sector. The employment relationship is based on the employment contract regulations of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart (AVO-DRS), comparable to the collective agreement of the public service of the Länder (TV-L). The position is classified in pay grade 13.
We require candidates to identify with the Catholic Church. Membership of the Catholic Church is desirable.
